The Islamic Republic has made a major effort to promote organ donations by the public and organ transplantation by the medical community. A Majlis deputy last month announced that the country now has six million people holding organ donation cards.
That means that 11 percent of the adult population of Iran has signed up to donate organs upon death.
That compares with 58 percent of the adult population in the United States that has registered to donate organs upon death. In the US, registration is commonly done when a person gets a driver’s license, so it is much easier to sign up in the United States.
The highest proportion of organ donors is in Spain, where the state by law has made everyone an organ donor unless they take action to opt out.
