Few nomads anymore

December 21, 2018

Results from the 2016 Census show there are 1,186,830 nomads living in Iran or about 1.5 percent of the population. About a century earlier, the nomadic population of Iran was estimated to be about 30 percent. Despite their small numbers now, the census showed that the nomads handled 30 percent of the country’s livestock. The nomads form about the same proportion of Iran’s population as Native Americans form of the US population.
