The Lebanese-American man awaiting trial for attacking Salman Rushdie with a knife, blinding him in one eye, will not be accused of acting in response to Ayatollah Khomeini’s 1989 fatva ordering the killing of Rushdie. The New York prosecutor said there was no need to provide a motive at the trial given that the attack took place in a large hall with hundreds of witnesses and was videotaped.
