Iran’s bid for a $5 billion loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) apparently failed because the European countries joined the United States in opposing the loan.
In a posting on the presidential website September 30, President Rohani said he had expected the European countries to back Iran’s application for the huge loan, which was made last March.
He said the IMF executive board had agreed to Iran’s request. But Washington, with the support of the European states, torpedoed it.
The EU has been silent about Iran’s loan request. The Trump Administration actively campaigned against it.
The request was believed to be the largest made by any country to tap into a special new fund for tackling the coronavirus.
