Europe frets over converts to Islam

of the rapid spread of Islam and increasing conversion of their nations from Christianity, Iranian Vice President Mohammad-Reza Mir-Tajeddini has said.

The Fars news agency quoted him as saying, “Leaders of the European countries feel deeply endangered by the growing desire and conversion of their people from Christianity to the religion of Islam and the increasing number of mosques in their countries,” Mir-Tajeddini.

There was once only a single Shiite mosque in Germany, but now there are 60, he said.

Germany is estimated to have 3 million Muslims among 25 million Catholics and 25 million Protestants.  Most of the Muslims are Turks or other immigrants from the Muslim world.  Few are German converts.

The vice president described the Islamic Awakening, as Iran calls the Arab Spring, as one of the important contributors to the tendency of Europeans toward spirituality, justice-seeking and Islamic values.

“The materialistic culture of the West has tried much to reverse this trend, but to no avail because the human nature is attracted to spirituality,” he said.
