Two deadly intercity bus crashes in the space of just three weeks have killed 30 people. Both buses overturned. The first crash occurred near Savad Kuh, in the foothills on the north side of the Alborz Mountains, early January 9, killing at least 20 and injuring 24 others. The bus was headed from Tehran to Gonbad-e Kavus in Golestan province. Police spoke of a “technical glitch” as the cause of the accident, a standard explanation. The second crash was reported January 28 near Esfahan, resulting in 10 deaths and more than 20 injured. Police said the driver fell asleep at the wheel.
