Some 4.5 million Iranians who live abroad are currently getting welfare payments of 455,000 rials ($15) each month. The spokesman for the Majlis Budget Committee said the committee is contemplating cutting those people off. That’s almost a billion dollars a year being sent as welfare to people who were rich enough to leave. It isn’t clear why it is talking so long to think this through.
