Couple in England convicted of fraud

The ex-husband, Gholam Sefy, 44, a building guard, was sentenced to 18 months in prison. His former wife, Jamileh Sobhani, 46, got a suspended one-year sentence and is required to carry out 180 hours of charitable work.

Sefy was convicted of conning a vulnerable man in Oxford, England,s out of more than $60,000. The conned man’s bank became suspicious and started the investigation. The court said Sefy took advantage of the man when he was emotionally drained after the death of a parent.

Sefy and his wife were jointly convicted of assorted cases of credit card fraud and fraud against the local government in the area where they lived by claiming welfare benefits they were not due.

After they divorced, they continued to work on frauds together. They told credit card companies their cards had been stolen and claimed back payments of almost $8,000.
