A Chinese university-rating service ranks 13 Iranian universities among the best one thousand in the world—but not a single one in the top 300.
The best ranked Iranian university is the University of Tehran, which is placed in the bloc of the best universities from 301 to 400.
This is slightly different from the British-based rating system long run by the Education Supplement of The Times of London. Those ratings placed 19 Iranian universities in the world’s top 1,000 and ranked Babol Noshirvani University of Technology as the best university in Iran. Babol did not even make the list of The Times in previous years.
Like the Chinese ranking, the best Iranian university on the British list did not make it into the top 300 in the world.
The British ranking system shows American schools overwhelmingly dominating the top ranks. And so does the Chinese ranking. The Chinese list of the top 20 universities in the world includes 16 American schools, three British and one Swiss.
The accompanying chart shows the rankings of Iranian universities by both the Shanghai consultancy and The Times of London.
Of the 13 universities placed in the top 1,000 by the Shanghai rankings, all but one also appear in the top 1,000 of The Times. Only Tarbiat Modarres University did not make the listing by The Times. The Times had 19 Iranian universities in the world’s top 1,000; seven of them did not make the Shanghai listing.
