Alex Vatanka of the Middle East Institute in Washington, DC, writes that Syrian President Bashir al-Assad is believed holding meetings with the Americans while he has refused to join Tehran in its rants against Israel Damascus has been silent about the April exchange of military actions by Iran and Israel. Vatanka says there are even reports Assad is giving Israel intelligence about Iranians inside Syria. He suggests that now that Assad has prevailed in the civil war, “the Iranians are perhaps no longer needed.”
