Several pylons were bombed and toppled last Tuesday in Diyala province, just a short distance across the border from Iran. The toppling towers killed one police officer and injured two others, Iraqi officials said.
No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. The attack may have been intended as an objection to Iranian involvement in Iraq. On the other hand, pylons have been bombed through- out the country, presumably by groups that oppose the Iraqi government and want to make it look ineffective. The limited supply of power is a very sensitive political issue in Iraq. Four power lines now link Iran and Iraq. Only one day before the one power line was at- tacked, the Iraqi Electricity Ministry announced that the fourth power line link with Iran had been activated about 300 kilome-ters south of the one severed by the bombing.
