Iran has spent $40 billion over the last 20 years to build and operate its nuclear infrastructure, according to Israeli calculations reported by Agence France Presse. That comes to $2 billion a year, a huge sum considering that all that Iran has gotten out of it so far is some medical isotopes and a decade’s worth of new fuel for the small reactor in Tehran that produces those isotopes. It wasn’t clear if the $40 billion includes the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, for which Iran and Russia have not given a price tag in more than a decade.
