Bam re-do slammed as too modern

List for failure to comply with UN standards on its reconstruction, the Mehr news agency has reported.

Mehr failed to make clear if UNESCO had put such a threat in writing or if Mehr was just speculating about possible UNESCO action.

UNESCO has complained frequently about the way the Islamic Republic handles its historic sites.  It has threaten to remove the majestic Shah Jahan Square in Esfahan from the list unless Esfahan dismantles a modern tower being built that would overshadow one side of he square.  Iran has pledged to comply, but the city has dragged its feet, proceeded very slowly and is still not in compliance.

The Bam Citadel is the world’s largest adobe building.  It was badly damaged in the 2003 earthquake; some parts were reduced to dust.  UNESCO is helping with the reconstruction, but has complained that Iran is trying to modernize the site in some locales rather than rebuild it like the original.  It also complained about additions like a gasoline service station near the citadel.

Bam Governor Hossain Shayegh told Mehr the gasoline station had been closed and other changes in the plan made to comply with UNESCO standards.

The citadel was first built about 500 BCE, although most of the structure was added much later.  It was abandoned about 1850.
