Australia and Malaysia recently signed an agreement under which all “boat people” now found entering Australia will be sent to refugee camps in Malaysia. In return, Australia will accept many more people who have been given refugee service in Malaysia. Australia hopes this will stop people from trying to enter Australia by boat. Only a few thousand have done so in a decade, but the issue has become a nasty political issue in Australia.
