The Culture Ministry has proposed that the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art be transferred to a private foundation. The proposal has prompted protest demonstrations at the museum. The museum was a personal project of Empress Farah. Because of its emphasis on modern art, which is disdained by the regime, it has only held limited events since the revolution. But its collection, recognized throughout the world as a major one, has been protected by the regime. The American-based Art Newspaper said the ministry wants to transfer the museum to the Rudaki Foundation, which oversees the Tehran Symphony Orchestra, much to the dissatisfaction of its conductor.
