Annual US visa lottery underway

October 14, 2022

The US State Department has kicked off its annual visa lottery that will issue 55,000 immigrant visas around the world with Iranians usually applying in huge numbers and thus becoming big winners each year.

The State Department began accepting applications October 5.  The application window will close at noon Eastern Time, Tuesday, November 8.

The program for foreigners who lack US sponsors to come to America will provide up to 55,000 green cards before September 30, 2024.

Applications may be submitted only through the site https://dvprogram.state.gov.  The same site includes the entry form that must be used.

The winners will be drawn randomly by computer and there is no cost to apply.

Due to the expected huge volume of entries, State Department officials urge participants not to wait until the end of the month to submit their applications, because excessive demand later may slow the system down.

“Do not wait until the last week of the registration period to enter, as heavy demand may result in website delays. No late entries or paper entries will be accepted,” the authorities said in the official Instructions for the Diversity Immigrant Visa Program DV-2024.

“The law allows only one entry per person during each entry period. The Department of State uses sophisticated technology to detect multiple entries. Submission of more than one entry will render you ineligible,” they noted.

After May 6, 2023, applicants should check the same website, where the winners of the lottery draw will be listed.  If anyone gets an email purporting to announce that you are a winner, that is a scam.  “The Department of State will never send you an email telling you that you have been selected,” the notice proclaimed in bold type.
