Alireza Pahlavi becomes dad 7 months after death

The office of his brother, Reza Pahlavi, announced last Friday that Alireza’s fiancé, Raha Didevar, gave birth to a daughter, named Iryana Leila, on July 26.

Alireza committed suicide January 4, shooting himself in his home in Boston. He was 44 years old. His fiance is reportedly 37. She would have been about two months pregnant at the time of Alireza’s suicide.

There were reports at the time that Alireza was engaged, but the family did not address those rumors and the Iran Times was unable to confirm them.

The family said little Friday in announcing the birth. Reza Pahlavi’s statement said, “We know you will join us, out of respect and love for our dearest Alireza, and allow the baby and her mother, Ms. Raha Didevar, to recover and thrive in peace and privacy.”

Alireza was the second child of the late Shah to commit suicide. Alireza’s younger sister, Leila, died of a drug overdose in 2001 at the age of 31. The surviving children of the Shah and Empress Farah are Reza, 50, and Farahnaz, 47.

In 2001, Alireza announced his engagement to Sarah Tabatabai. At some point, that engagement was dissolved. It isn’t known when Alireza met Didevar.
