When President Raisi died in a helicopter accident three years into his term and Mahmud Pezeshkian was elected to replace him, it threw Iran’s election cycle out of whack. Normally, this year would have seen a presidential election accompanied by an election for city and village councils.
The Majlis has now voted to extend the term of council members by one year until 2026. So, until another president dies in office, Iran will elect council members every four years with the next term starting in 2026 and will elect the president and Majlis every four years with the joint balloting starting in 2028.
