Perhaps what the Islamic Republic most needs is a fact-checker. Politicians often say the oddest things. But there is no one in Iran to say, “That’s utter nonsense.” In the latest incidence, Asadollah Badamchian, a leader of the Islamic Coalition Party and Majlis deputy until losing in the 2012 election, proclaimed last week that the election of President Ahmadi-nejad in 2005 so stunned the West that the US secretary of state was forced to resign. Really? Condoleezza Rice became secretary of state January 26, 2005, and was secretary when Ahmadi-nejad was elected the next June. She remained secretary of state almost four more years until January 20, 2009, when Barrack Obama took office and named his own secretary of state.
