Construction will start soon after Now Ruz on Iran’s second nuclear power plant, Ali-Akbar Salehi, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, has announced. In August, he said Iran and Russia would soon sign a memorandum of understanding governing plans for the second reactor. But there has been no announcement of any signing. And, after that, the two countries must negotiate a contract. So it was unclear how Salehi could expect actual construction to begin soon after Now Ruz, which is just four months away. Salehi didn’t say where the new plant would be cited, except that it would be along the Persian Gulf coast because the goal is to use the power from the plant to desalinate water to supply dry regions of southern Iran.
