President Rohani has directed officials to look into the possibility of resuming direct flights between Iran and the United States to facilitate tourism. Iran Air has not flown to the United States since before the revolution.
Akbar Torkan, the acting chief of the Supreme Council on Expatriate Affairs, said, “He has ordered studying the possibility of direct flights between Iran and the United States in order to obviate the problems facing visits home by Iranian expatriates.”
The idea faces several hurdles, the first being that US sanctions don’t allow Iran to fly into the US commercially.
Landing slots are also much in demand, so it isn’t clear if Iran could fly the North Atlantic route.
