the world’s second tallest dam has been rejected and the contract will be given to an Iranian contractor instead. Iran is planning a dam on the Bakhtiari River in a valley in the Zagros mountains between Lorestan and Khuzestan provinces. It is to be 315 meters (1,033 feet) high and drive a 1,500-megawatt power plant, 50 percent bigger than the Bushehr nuclear power plant. The two highest dams in the world today are both on the Vakhsh River in Tajikistan and were built during the Soviet era. According to the International Committee on Large Dams, they are 335 meters and 300 meters high. Lest some fear for safety, Iran has built many high dams, with the biggest so far being the 222-meter Karun-4 dam on the Karun River.
