About 4,000 people had packed into a sports arena designed to hold 3,000, said Rahim Nuripour, mayor of Khorramdarreh. He said the children were crushed when the crowd rushed to the exits after the taping was over.
Two of the dead children were seven and another was 6. Hospital officials said that two of them had died instantly and two others, who had sustained head injuries, died in the hospital. Mehr News reported that the rest of the injured were in good condition.
The children were all attending the taping of “Happy Aunt,” a popular TV show that has been running for over five years.
Authorities in Khorramdarreh have arrested three people, including the show’s producer.
Officials said that the program’s staff had not received permission from city officials to tape the show at the sports arena.
