Shajarian, 71, is considered the master of traditional lyrics in Iran. He is also a composer and calligrapher.

Shajarian, who makes his home in Tehran, began studying vocal music under his father at the age of five, started the study of classical Persian music at the age of 12 and made his first career appearance in 1959 on Radio Khorasan.
