Police were called to Bani-Sadr’s Versailles home, which was empty at the time of the break-in early on New Year’s Day, police said.
His daughter, Firouze Bani-Sadr, told Agence France Presse (AFP) that police protection for her father ceased years ago.
“This break-in may have a criminal nature, but it can also be something else,” his daughter said. “One has the impression that the home is under surveillance, so they acted when there was nobody present,” she said.
Bani-Sadr, now 78 years old, was the first president elected after the revolution. He served from February 1980 to June 1981 when he fell out with Ayatollah Khomeini, who authorized the Majlis to expel him from office. He then fled to France, where he has lived ever since.
Bani-Sadr’s wife was attacked outside the house November 26. Firouze Bani-Sadr said that attack and the theft showed her father needed more security.
A judicial official told AFP there was no obvious link between the break-in and Bani-Sadr’s present or past political activities, or the attack against his wife. But the official added that investigators were looking into all possibilities.
