ago when the American Embassy was seized by militants. These photos show the Tuesday actions starting at upper left where students helped one another to get to the top of the main gate of the embassy. No police inter-fered as the students simply stepped across the top of the gate and jumped down inside the embassy compound. Once inside, they hauled down the Union Jack and raised the Iranian national flag (next photo down). They raided the embassy buildings breaking windows and then climbed inside the buildings. In the photo at upper right, the invaders burned a British flag and, in the next photo, they pulled the British coat of arms off a wall and dragged it outside. Two men were photographed carrying off framed photos of Queen Elizabeth II, which appeared to be the prized souvenirs of the day. In the photo at right, four file folders can also be seen in mid-air. Those inside the embassy buildings threw immense quantities of paper out the windows and the ground around the compound was almost completely covered in paper at the end of the day. Finally the police moved in (next to bottom photo) and grappled with the demonstrators. Tear gas was eventually used and the police took full control (bottom picture) late in the day.
