Borujerdi said that Iranian security forces had captured the Number Two leader of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), Murat Karayilan, the party’s field commander. But Karayilan later appeared in a PKK video saying he was alive and well—and uncaptured. A Turkish television station had reported the Kurd’s arrest Saturday. On Monday, Borujerdi said he was misquoted. He said he had only said that a Turkish television channel had reported the arrest. But two Iranian news agencies—Fars and Mehr—both quoted Borujerdi as saying flatly that Iran’s security services had arrested Karayilan. Borujerdi has long had a habit of making announcements as fact that have appeared on news outlets a few hours earlier.
