The National Iranian Gas Company announced December 23 that Iran’s natural gas production from the South Pars gasfield in the Persian Gulf now exceeds that of Qatar, which owns half of the gasfield. Some background: In August 2014, Iran said its South Pars output would bypass Qatar’s by March 2018. In June 2016, Iran said its output would exceed Qatar’s by March 2017. In March 2019, Iran said its gas output from South Pars had for the first time exceeded Qatar’s output from the joint gasfield. That was almost six years ago. Why the announcement now?
