Several news websites quoted Ali Darabi, the deputy director of state broadcasting, as telling broadcasters, “From now on, teaching how to cook non-Iranian dishes is banned.”
Tehran enjoys a growing number of foreign cuisine restaurants that mostly appeal to the upper class. Fast foods like hamburgers have enjoyed a surge in popularity in recent years, much to the disgust of the authorities. Pizza and pasta have been popular since long before the revolution and it isn’t clear if the TV ban will apply to spaghetti and macaroni, which Tehranis under the age of 60 all grew up with.
