Two Metro trains collided December 22, injuring 22 passengers but causing no deaths. The collision occurred at 7 a.m. near the Chitgar Metro station in western Tehran on Line 5, which links Tehran to Karaj. The crash occurred where the trains operate on the surface and not in a tunnel.
Iran Daily reported that a local train was somehow put onto a track occupied by an express train. The head of the Metro company, Mahdi Shayesteh-Asl, said the accident showed the need to upgrade signaling systems! Eleven of the injured were serious enough to be hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
According to Tehran Mayor Alireza Zakani, five or six people were injured in the crash itself while the rest were hurt when “mayhem” broke out as passengers tried to get out of the crashed train.
