Responding to the soaring price of domestically-built cars, the Majlis recently passed a law allowing the import of foreign-made cars after three years in which car imports have been banned. The 12-man Council of Guardians, however, has now vetoed that bill, saying it violates Clause 2 of Article 110 of the Islamic Republic Constitution. That clause says the Supreme Leader has the power of “supervision over the proper execution of the general policies of the system.” The Supreme Leader has long argued against car imports, showing support for domestic carmakers.
