The national oil company has announced that “initial” conclusions from a natural gas search off the Caspian shoreline reveal that a newly discovered gasfield there contains 3.3 trillion cubic meters of gas, making it the 10th largest gas reservoir in the world.
The world’s largest gasfield is the one Iran shares with Qatar in the Persian Gulf, which is call South Pars by Iran and North Dome by Qatar.
In recent years, Iran has shown only limited interest in gas deposits in the Caspian because of the abundance of gas available from South Pars. Now that South Pars is almost fully developed, Iran is showing renewed interest in the Caspian.
The Caspian gasfield, named Chalus, is estimated to contain one-fourth as much gas as South Pars, the oil company said.
Chalus is located in the shallow southern sector of the Caspian and not in the area disputed between Iran and Azer-baijan.
