In a surprise, the rate of inflation ceased to increase last month—though it still rose at an outlandish rate. It went up at an annual rate of 44.8 percent in the month ending December 20, a slight reduction from the rate of 46.4 percent at the end of the previous month. Those are the rates calculated as a change from the same month in the previous year. Measured as an annual average, inflation continued to rise. It was 30.5 percent as of December 20, up from 29.9 the previous month. The inflation just for the month ending December 20 was 5.2 percent, more than the annual rate for most countries.
