Production of the Pride and Peugeot 405, Iran’s least expensive and most unsafe cars, was supposed to stop last Now Ruz, but did not. Then it was announced production would end with the coming Now Ruz. Now the Institute of Standards says production of both cars will end in June with the police not issuing license plates for either of those cars after June. It remains to be seen what will really happen. The car manufacturers—SAIPA for the Pride and Iran Khodro for the Peugeot 405—have fought tooth and nail against an end to the production lines. The companies say there are no substitutes for these low end models and families will be forced to buy more expensive models.
