The latest scandal is the revelation thatTehran celebrities are using ambu-lances with screaming sirens to get around the capital and avoid the horrendous traffic jams.
Riding ambulances to skip Tehran’s chaotic traffic has become trendy among the celebrity class and wealthy Iranians, the head of the organization of private ambulance services, Dr. Mojtaba Lohrasbi, announced and denounced August 20.
“The police in Tehran are so busy they have not been able to end this illegal practice,” he told the Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA). He didn’t say why the private ambulance services had allowed such people to rent the ambulances.
He said it’s not just celebrities doing this, but also tutors who charge huge sums to parents to prepare their high school children for the annual college entrance exams. They use the ambulances to rush from one home to the next to give their expensive private lessons.
The regulations say that no ambulance may rush with flashing lights and sirens unless they have a specific medical assignment.
Tehran’s prosecutor has issued an order to end the violations, Lohrasbi told ISNA, adding, “But since Tehran’s police forces are very busy, they have not yet been able to cooperate with us in halting ambulances that violate the regulations.”
