The US aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis entered the Persian Gulf March 22, conveniently picking the day after Now Ruz when all Iranian newspapers were closed down for the holidays. It had been a full year since a US aircraft carrier was last in the Persian Gulf. There was no word how long the carrier would remain there, but it was still in the Persian Gulf as of April 6. Iranian newspapers, which had resumed publication by then, ignored the ship’s presence, suggesting the regime thought it best not to make an issue of the carrier.
