The Islamic Republic has for the first time admitted having meetings with the Taliban. Ali Shamkhani, the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, said the Taliban should have a role in the governance of Afghanistan, “although not the dominant role.” He did not explain why he thought Iran should have a say in who governs Afghanistan.
