In his first comment on Sudan’s severing of diplomatic relations with Iran, Sudanese President Omer al-Bashir (photo) told France 24 TV it was done because Iran was seeking to promote Shiism through its embassy in Khartoum. In September 2014, Sudan closed all of Iran’s cultural centers and expelled Iran’s cultural attache for seeking to spread Shiism. But Bashir said that didn’t stop the proselytizing. So when other Arab states broke relations with Iran in January after the Saudi embassy in Tehran was torched by a mob, Bashir decided to cut all ties.
