State broadcasting quotes former President Ali-Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani as saying the Americans invaded Afghanistan in 2001 saying they were doing so to stop drug production, but Afghanistan now produces even more drugs. But the Bush Administration never cited drug production as a reason for the invasion. The invasion was launched because the Taliban, then ruling Afghanistan, refused an American ultimatum to hand over Osama bin Laden and the leadership of Al-Qaeda for the 9-11 attacks.
