The Health Ministry has created a new research institute that it expects will reduce Iran’s brain drain by providing laboratory facilities for researchers.
Deputy Health Minister Reza Malekzadeh said the main cause of young people emigrating from Iran is the paucity of research labs where they can pursue their scientific interests.
He said, “We are in desperate need of a plan to attract and keep this human capital.”
He said the Health Ministry was creating a research laboratory to be called NIMAD and is now awaiting a cabinet decision to provide the lab with a sufficient budget to allow it to open next year.
Many research scientists have cited the paucity of research labs and budgets as a reason for leaving Iran. However, very few of those emigrating are research scientists.
