The government says it will nominate ancient Susa this year for addition to UNESCO’s World Heritage list. Susa, modern Shush, in Khuzestan province, was the capital of the Elamites and subsequently the winter capital of the Achaemenid Empire. In 330 BCE, Alexander the Great captured Susa and plundered it. In the modern era, it was first excavated by archaeologists about 150 years ago.
