Osman Daramy, 12, and his accomplice, 13-year-old Krystal Callender, reportedly attacked their schoolmate March 30 at the Dreyfus Intermediate School on Staten Island, one of the five boroughs of New York City.
Authorities report that Daramy and Callender spent two months harassing and tormenting the Muslim girl. Last month, the two reportedly beat the girl up, punching and kicking her to the ground. It was the fourth time during a period of two months that the pair had attacked the girl.
“Are you Muslim?” the sixth grade boy allegedly shouted before he tried to rip off the hejab wrapped around the head of the victim, who was described as an honors student.
The case will be handled by Family Court since both assailants are juveniles. In addition the assault charges, Callendar has also been charged with attempted robbery.
The young Muslim child, whose name has not been released, was not Daramy’s only victim. Earlier that same week, Daramy cut off a non-Muslim female classmate’s hair with scissors before running wild around the classroom with the scissors in his hand. Daramy is not facing any criminal charges for that incident, but he was “suspended in-house” according to a school insider.
One school source said the boy is one of five students who allegedly robbed and beat up a pizza deliveryman of pizzas and drinks in the school parking lot earlier last month. Three students were arrested in that incident, “but he was one of the two who got away,” the New York Post quoted one anonymous source as saying.
“This child is a terror. He goes around terrorizing staff and students,” one teacher who requested to remain anonymous told the New York Post.
