A new terminal has just been opened at the Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKIA) in Tehran that will boost the capacity for passengers by 80 percent.
Until now all international flights to Tehran have used IKIA while all domestic flights have used the old Mehrabad Airport. Now, most international flights will be shifted to the new terminal and some domestic flights will use the older IKIA terminal. Also, Mehrabad is barred from handling flights from midnight to 5 a.m., so domestic flights will now be scheduled for those hours but be handled at IKIA.
The government originally contracted with French firms to design and build the new terminal, but they pulled out in 2017 when the Trump Administration re-imposed sanctions. So the construction work was completed by local firms.
The new Salam terminal is the second of three planned terminals at IKIA.
