AirAsia said that as of Sunday, October 14, it will suspend its four weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur and Tehran because of challenging business conditions, notably “the volatility of the Iranian currency.”
BMI (British Midlands International) earlier announced it was halting its flights. It said it did that because Iran’s refusal to sell it jet fuel for the return flights to Britain made the service too expensive to continue. Iran stopped selling fuel to some airlines last year in retaliation for the refusal of some firms to sell Iranian airlines fuel in Europe.
Travel agents in Tehran told Agence France Presse that Georgian Airways was also considering a halt in its four weekly flights.
Major international airlines that continue to service Tehran include Alitalia, KLM, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines.
