Gemany admits 50 Iranians

Iran Times International July 30, 2010:Germany last week took in the first of 50 refugees from Iran it has said it will accept as a means of expressing displeasure with the Islamic Republic. The Interior Ministry said 12 Iranians arrived last week, another 26 had received approval, and applications for another dozen slots were being reviewed. All involve people who have fled Iran and been waiting in Turkey for some country to accept them. There are about 6,000 Iranian refugees in Turkey, so the German opening for 50 is more a political statement than practical assistance for refugees. Of the 6,000 Iranians in Turkey, an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 have fled to Turkey since the presidential elections 14 months ago. Der Spiegel, the German newsweekly, quoted an Iranian human rights activists as saying most of those being given asylum by Germany are journalists The Interior Ministry said other Iranians come to Germany under its general asylum policy, but this particular group of 50 was being selected as a “gesture of solidarity” with the Iranian people.
